Leak Detection System

Description of the system

LOGSTOR supplies surveillance systems for detection of moisture in the insulation by means of the two sensor wires, embedded in the insulation of pipes and components.

Damages of the outer casing, service pipe or joints are consequently detected in due time, before corrosion damages appear on the service pipe.

The function of the systems is based on the eletric properties of the insulation changing with the moisture content.

Dependent on the quantity of moisture and its conductivity the electric resistance between wire and pipe decreases. This system is called "resistance surveillance".

Dry foam has a dielectric constant of 1, whereas water has a dielectric constant of 80. This means that the capacitor effect between wire and pipe changes radically, when there is moisture in the insulation. This system is called "pulse surveillance".

Pulse surveillance is independent of the resistance between wire and pipe and consequently also of the conductivity of the moisture, e.g. in case of very clean water.

The components, described in the following, may be used in and/or built together for the surveillance systems on more different levels:

Reference points system
The embedded wires are accessible in buildings, inspections chambers etc., from where the condition of the pipe network can be checked with a portable measuring instrument

Detector system
The embedded wires are connected to a detector indicating that a fault has arisen. The measuring is carried out with a portable instrument.

Fault locator system
The embedded wires are connected to an electronic fault locator which indicates precisely where in the pipe network a fault has arisen.

Finally, the faults, registered either by detectors or fault locator, can be transmitted by modem
to a centrally placed surveillance plant.
The signal can be transmitted via: one of the embedded wires, own underground cable, the
telephone network, radio signals or combinations of these.

LOGSTOR is not a supplier of central surveillance.
